[pɛl'jo], Paul, französischer Sinologe, * Paris 28. 5. 1878, ✝ ebenda 26. 10. 1945; wurde 1901 Professor an der École Française d'Extrême-Orient in Hanoi und leitete 1906-09 archäologische Expeditionen in Nordwestchina und Ostturkestan, die u. a. wertvolle Schriftdokumente des 7.-9. Jahrhunderts erbrachten; 1911 wurde er Professor am Collège de France. Seine detailreichen Studien setzten für die Sinologie methodisch neue Maßstäbe.
 
Werke: Notes sur l'histoire de la Horde d'Or (herausgegeben 1949); Mémoires sur les coutumes du Cambodge de Tcheou Takouan (herausgegeben 1951); Notes on Marco Polo, 3 Bände (herausgegeben 1959-73); Notes critiques d'histoire kalmouke, 2 Bände (herausgegeben 1960).
